Questions & Answers
Does Houston Buyers Club prescribe or recommend a list of nutritional supplements for specific illness or side effects?
No. Houston Buyers Club does not recommend or prescribe. We provide information only about the effects nutritional supplements have on the effects of illness or the prescribed medications for illness.
What is the difference between Houston Buyers Club and a regular health food store?
Houston Buyers Club is different from regular health food stores in about six ways:
Access to Vital Nutritional Supplements: Those living with chronic illness may have to take many different types of nutritional supplements as well as larger amounts of them. This cost can be a significant financial burden to those already spending lots of money on their health care. HBC makes these quality nutritional supplements accessible to those living with chronic illness by making them available at a much lower cost. To see some of the vitamin regimens many of our clients have to take to manage or reduce their side effects, visit our side effects page.
Nutritional Supplement Grant Programs: HBC is a conduit through which many living with chronic illness (like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, diabetes, and some forms of cancer) can receive nutritional supplements for free. Individual donations, community events that raise money for HBC, corporate donations and collaborations with other non profits help fund this program for Harris county residents.
Dietitian Services: Registered dietitian (R.D.) services are available for free to those living with chronic illness. The consults are conducted by our contracted R.D. and always involves a B.I.A (bio-electric-impedance-analysis) test. This test is used by all of the top HIV physicians in Houston and by many others around the country to measure important markers in a persons health.
Physician Support: Many local physicians and AIDS service providers refer their patients to Houston Buyers Club to introduce unfamiliar nutritional supplement regimens that are doctor prescribed. Physicians treating chronic illnesses like hepatitis C and HIV rely on our experience to help their patient integrate these new pills or powders into lifestyle and eating habits.
Peer Education: Many who are newly diagnosed with illness are referred to HBC for guidance in treatment options. We give the client side effect treatment information to be reviewed by the treating physician. Further, we educate the patient about the importance of certain laboratory analysis to request from the treating physician that might not be ordered unless requested by the patient. For example, Jon Kaiser, M.D. and author of Healing HIV, finds that well over half of his patients test positive for potentially dangerous intestinal parasites. Not only can a person lose a significant amount of lean body mass, but, the absorption of medicines, vitamins, and food is severely compromised. Most physicians don’t request this test for the newly diagnosed; and, further, many physicians don’t request parasite tests for their patients who present with frequent occurrences lasting more than several days.
Side Effects Guide: With local and national grants Houston Buyers Club has produced a comprehensive tool that physicians and patients together can use to reduce and eliminate fourteen common side effects caused by disease or medications used to treat the disease.
